Happening for Movie Camera, Cinema Solubile and all kind of performative and experimental Cinema
Digital Cinema allows to expand the palette of the maker, as well as brake up the format,or how the film is experienced. And the medium, how the film is to be made.
I think of Cinema the sense of trasformatore, to work at the level of artifact as well at the meta level of rules of evolution and situation. This is how I conceptualized my experiments into this much beloved art form.
CINEMA SOLUBILE: First experiments in time were grouped under the name of "Cinema Solubile", a performative futurist format for a show in two parts, were 11 makers were called to participate to a "impossible" task, to make in 23 hours a short film according or against the rules of the 1914 Futurist Manifesto of Cinema. The short film should have been maximum 6'22"11 frames long, could be realized with any technique that allowed the viewer to receive it as cinema, so this means projected in the dark on a screen and viewed together as a audience at the same time and place. After the vision of the clip the original would be destroyed by the maker on stage.
On the stage, presented by me, there is a live orchestra for musical improvisation. The first evening, fragments of futurist cinema and poetry help introduce the 11 makers that will then put "in Marinetti's bombetta hat" their title for a film. Shuffled and taken afterwards becomes the race against time to make the film.
Films are presented in the cinema the night after. The format started in 2006, in de Melkweg, Amsterdam, and had 10 editions so far all over Europe with great fun of participants and audience as well.
HAPPENING FOR MOVIE CAMERA: When the making of a film is the mover of a process. The flow includes all the people participating, and is created to make them performe for the camera. Is a film created in a place for the whole community that inhabits it and includes everyone to be perceived as a feast and a energetic shake. The "viewer" of the film, afterwards, can access the point of view of the camera, yet the artwork is the creation of the film itself. Again, I am creating a situation for surprises and collective action. All the connections, the collective vision, that justify the performance are found while doing it. the film is composed to be performed in long single shots sequences such as not to have the need of editing afterwards.
Apart of the use of Cinema as a performative element I have been designing, shooting, writing, performing with images and directing short movies. You can have an impression choosing on my vimeo channel what you like to see.
